Strauss's grandest opera has never looked better. Renee Fleming starred as the Marschallin, and looked pretty good for a 58 year old singer portraying a 32 year old character. This role will be Fleming's final one, as she is retiring - at least from major roles, if not from opera altogether.
Soprano Elīna Garanča as Octavian, did a great job of portraying a 17 yr old young man in love with an older woman.
The opera is full of comedy and tragedy, and the staging was good. I don't really understand why the director chose to set it in 1911 Vienna, which is several decades more modern than the original storyline called for, but it worked.
