Movie review - The Ritz (1976)

"The Ritz" may have been filmed some 40 years ago, but it stands the test of time.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075144/

The plot is basic.  On his deathbed, a crime boss orders his son to "Get Proclo - kill the son of a bitch".   Gaetano Proclo, the gangsters son in law, played by Jack Weston, hides out in a gay bathhouse (The Ritz), and many funny things transpire.  Kaye Ballard plays Vivian Proclo, daughter of the deceased gangster, and wife of Gaetano.

Gaetano is fat, and has to escape the clutches of a "chubby chaser."  A very young Treat Williams (age 25 at the time of the filming) plays a private detective hired to track Gaetano down.  Williams speaks with a squeaky voice (think of someone who just sucked helium).

The main attraction for me, however, is Rita Moreno, who portrays Googie Gomez, a singer who wants to make it big and has been told that a famous producer will be in the house that evening.

The Ritz is sort of modeled after the famous Continental Baths, where Bette Midler first came to fame.

Moreno was 45 when the movie was filmed, and she's in darn good shape for her age.  The other characters assume at first that she's a transvestite, and hilarity ensues.

We watched it last night, after a lapse of a couple of years, and it did not fail to please.

Googie's big number.
