Live from the Met in HD - La Boheme

The 'Live From the Met in HD series is running a few summer encores.  Last night we saw a performance of La Boheme that was filmed in 2014.

La Boheme is Puccini's most popular opera, and last night's performance was magnificent.   Kristine Opolais was terrific as the ill-fated Mimi.  All the more so because she'd sung the role of Madama Butterfly the night before and hadn't gotten to sleep until the wee hours of the morning.  She was called at 7:30 a.m. to replace another singer who was ill.

Ms Opolais is one of the best sopranos on the scene these days, and Puccini heroines seem to suit her.  We saw her in Madama Butterfly in the last season.  She is truly as good an actress as she is a singer.

The role of Rudolfo, Mimi's lover, was sung by Vittorio Grigolo, who we saw last season in the title role of Hoffmann in Tales of Hoffmann.

If you haven't looked into this film series, you are missing a treat.

Here, Rudolfo and Mimi have just met and become instantly smitten.  She's singing her first big aria of the opera - , mi chiamano Mimì  (yes, they call me Mimi).

Here, the lusty, flirting Musetta is in the middle of her famous aria, Musetta's Waltz Song

From the well-known scene in Act III, where Mimi and Rudolfo agree to stay together until spring, when the flowers bloom.
