Puccini's final masterpiece was broadcast live in HD from the Met yesterday, and the 1987 Franco Zeffirelli production stands the test of time.
At fifty-two, Nina Stemme still has a gorgeous voice. Unfortunately the makeup and hair styling were not particularly flattering.
Still she played a convincing ice princess.
Zeffirelli's sets are always lavish and his productions include a huge cast. More to the point they
work.
Anita Hartig was wonderful in the role of Liu and the death scene was extremely well done.
I have seen Turandot performed several times in several venues, and my favorite was a 1995 production at the Sydney Opera House, featuring an all-Australian case, except for the title role, which was sung by American soprano Leona Mitchell.
