Live from the Met in HD - The Pearlfishers

For the first time in 100 years the Metropolitan Opera has a production of Bizet's Les Pecheurs de Perles on stage, and it's a cleverly done production.

Technology has come to the world of opera in a big way, as witness what we saw during the overture.  An underwater scene was backprojected onto a screen, and two and sometimes three people were seen, apparently swimming down to the bottom of the sea to retrieve pearls.  During the intermission, the movie audience was given a tour backstage, and we saw how it was done.

The supposed divers were in fact dancers suspended on cables, as they made swimming motions.
They even projected bubbles onto the screen to make it look realistic.

The role of Leila was sung by Diana Damrau, and she was very good

:
The two male leads were sung by Matthew Polenzani and Mariusz Kwiecien, and early in act one, they sang what is probably the most well-known duet for two men in all of opera.  If you saw the movie Gallipoli  you know what I'm talking about.

If you're an opera fan and haven't been to one of these live broadcasts, you owe it to yourself to do so.  I've been in the opera house many times, and have sat in the front row.  That being said, seeing the singers up close and personal on a movie screen is the best seat in the house.
